New Vermont Young Rider ATV Safety Course now available online from the Vermont State Police.

 

If you are 12 years of age or older but less than 18 years of age, you may operate an ATV only if you:

• Are on land owned by you, your parents, or your guardian or …
• Are under the direct supervision of an instructor while taking a state-approved safety education course or …
• Have been certified in a state-approved safety education course.

Vermont's new young rider safety course has finally been approved by the state, and the course is currently available only online.

According to the State of Vermont, this course meets the requirements of the Vermont Young Rider Law passed by the Legislature last winter.

 

The online course is free to take, and practice tests are also free.

However, a $30.00 fee is being charged for taking the "official test" and the issuance of a certificate which all riders between the ages of 12 and 18 must carry with them while riding open roads and the VASA Trail system on private property.

The absence of an approved course has, until now, caused Vermont Law Enforcement to overlook the requirement throughout this riding season, but with the official approval of a course, this new law will be enforced, and spot checks will be done to check for these certificates of completion.

Danny Hale, VASA Director, and many clubs around Vermont have asked for a better course that would involve actual classroom time and "on the wheeler skills training" by certified instructors to better educate our youth and provide them with a higher level of competency.

While this is the "official" program for now, watch for VASA and other Vermont ATV Clubs (this one included) to work for a better alternative than what has just been officially adopted!
